You raise some interesting points here. I think that deep certainty that your time was well-spent comes a lot from others' appreciation. If my friends inhabited and appreciated the structures I build in Minecraft as much as I do then it would be just as fulfilling as when I give them something I made with my hands. As it is it does feel slightly empty even though I enjoy it so much that I sketch plans up while I'm at work.
