Sure, then you just haven't seen some of the tat that's out there. There are industries built upon selling stuff that's literally useless. It's not just bad, as another post has said it's "cargo cult merchandise". Normally this stuff isn't even on sale outside of the holiday period. The resource usage difference between a good X and a bad X is also usually fairly minimal - it's the cost difference that's much larger.
