I wholeheartedly disagree. I loved the companion missions and the dive into the characters and their psychology. They all were interesting in different ways. Notably, I found that the Vicar had a really interesting progression as a character and his relationship with religion. It lead to some interesting philosophical dialogue, especially if you bring him when you meet the Iconoclasts. He has a healthy debate with their leader and they both come to the conclusion "let's agree to disagree". It was great.
