JOSE and COSE fill a void not filled by anything else on the market. Sure, Branca may compare to just a JWT, but it doesn't compare to a JWS let alone JOSE. If all you need is stateless auth tokens, use Branca or a good JWT library. IMHO, the problem is the libraries, not the JOSE(JWS/JWE/JWK/JWT/JWA) standard.
