- Miner49er 7y agoDoes this do cost of living adjustments?
- ChrisLomont 7y agoThey claim to. Supporting these numbers is the Washington Post link someone else presented with similar results, PPP adjusted.
- ceejayoz 7y agoRaw income and purchasing power are substantially different things.
- ChrisLomont 7y agoThat site adjusts for PPP, which is why they ask for location.
- ceejayoz 7y agoIf it does, it's not doing it very well. Entering $1,000 annual income for the USA is shown as being in the top 58% worldwide. The site implies that $0.52/hour leaves you better off than "the average labourer in Ghana [making] just $0.08 in the same time".
- ChrisLomont 7y agoI've shown three decent sources that give similar numbers. Feel free to post something credible that lets us compute otherwise. Also, why do you assume a 2000 hour work year is common worldwide? It's not.
- defertoreptar 7y agohttps://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/business/global-income-calculator/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/business/global... This is saying it puts you in the 67th percentile when adjusting for purchasing power, which is still saying a lot.
- ChrisLomont 7y agoIt says that for a 3 person household. For a single income, it puts you above 90%, eerily similar to the data I presented :)
- kauffj 7y agoPrepare to be downvoted, the average Hacker News reader really dislikes this fact.
- ceejayoz 7y agoThe average Hacker News reader can identify a misleading statistic.
- kauffj 7y agoWhat's misleading about it? Check a PPP adjustment, it's still easily top 50% worldwide.
- ceejayoz 7y agoWhich is a far cry from "top 5%", right?
- ChrisLomont 7y agoThe Washington Post article above puts it at around 90%. Here's an article saying 34K/yr puts you in the top 1% in the world [1], which is consistent with the above. Entering this number into my globalrichlist site gets 0.88% (pretty close) and the wapo article above gives 97th percentile, again close. If you have a similar site that computes world income rakings that doesn't reach such high values then please post it.
