We responded to them. That's how. Flat earthers were never taken seriously. A bunch of kooks. Then the History channel "documentaries" hit, interviewing the flat earthers and giving them air time. Facebook crusaders constantly posted memes making fun of flat earthers, and "disproving" them a la XKCD #386 [1] Counter-intuitively, their numbers grew.
