Maybe I understand what you are referring to.
If you are hired in a “plain” engineering position it can be difficult to break out as a product engineer. Are you allowed to talk to customers? Is your time zealously measured?
I’ve tried in different projects with varying degrees of success. Fortunately with full success currently.
It would probably be interesting to analyse and write notes on “how to go from plain engineering to product engineering in friendly, neutral and hostile environments”.
