I love the idea of taking sabbatical. If I were to take time for one, I think the structure would look more like what you're suggesting here. Expanding network of people to learn from and contributing to OSS. As introverted as I am, I have learned in recent years how much easier and faster it can be to learn from other people than from textbooks alone.
