I'd definitely recommend checking out the app "Movist". It's what I use instead of VLC or MPlayer when Qucktime (+Perian) doesn't cut it. I think it's based of MPlayer anyway, but it works very well on the Mac when VLC falters (or is just too obtuse to bother using).
