I recntly found out about J-PAL or Jameel Poverty Action lab (MIT) which is innovating in the area of randomised control trials for finding the most effective ways to end large scale poverty. This makes a much larger impact, often at the government policy or state level, and is backed by science. The founders of this lab were recently awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics.
