I think it's just more about content density. I think most feel the same way about too much meta-hn conversation. Are we on topic? Downvotes are just saying that maybe that comment wasn't welcome in this thread not that you aren't in any thread. It's a much cleaner downvote than those against controversial, but thought out opinions.
