Making coffee is a good analogy for any kind of hardware electronics development! Some things need to be planned out ahead of time like the overall mechanical design, but other things probably should be iterated quickly, maybe by using pre-made development kits and breadboards instead of fully designed circuit boards for initial firmware. As the article said at the end, it all basically boils down to "it depends..." :)
