Seems all is going to plan for Beijing, slowly encroaching on more human rights of the people of Hong Kong. I read an ominous quote from Global Times that said, when talking about the US Hong Kong bill:
"If we take this US bill seriously and shrink from tackling riots, Hong Kong will suffer from an accelerated collapse of the rule of law and be erased from the modern world.
[...]
If riots continue, Hong Kong is doomed." [1]
I suppose replacing the chain of command in terms of Hong Kong will help circumvent the CCP and secure more 'peace and prosperity' for China.

- onlyrealcuzzo 7y agoIt's pathetic how the mainstream media is reporting on this. Almost dead silence. Beijing has effectively removed our free speech. Businesses have a feduciary obligation to increase shareholder value, and saying anything bad about Beijing can have huge economic consequences.
- natechols 7y agoI've had no problem finding articles about this in mainstream publications, including the NY Times. Maybe it's only TV news that is silent?
- CharlesColeman 7y agoIt's definitely being reported on, it's just that the impeachment stuff has a much higher volume and is drowning a lot of it out.
- kp98 7y agoI think the most interesting event during all of the Hong Kong conflict was actually when the US congress first announced this bill. Within a day China responded with one of its casual opaque threats along the lines of "if congress passes this bill there will be consequences," which sounds a lot like when the CCP told Sweden there would be "consequences" for giving an award to a reporter against the state. So yeah, I agree with you the pressure on free speech that China has imposed on governments - not only corporations - but the united states government tells a story about Chinese aggression. Ultimately, China is far more vulnerable in this trade war than the US, so I expect more belligerence from China in the same way I would expect belligerence from a 7 year old boy when his toy is taken away.
- president 7y agoNot just business leaders but the government has been co-opted to shill for China. The author of Stealth War [1] writes that many members of the US congress have been lobbying for the CCP through dockets and/or have tremendous conflicts of interests through business or personal relationships. - justinzollars 7y agoAnother perspective: Hong Kongs fate was sealed in 1984 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-British_Joint_Declaration https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-British_Joint_Declaration with with the Sino British Joint Declaration, something I think of as a time bomb. The West and China need to acknowledge this problem and find a way forward that does not involve conflict or war.
- MrZongle2 7y agoSeriously though, wasn't Hong Kong doomed in December 1984 when the British government signed the handover agreement with the CCP?
