With the current trend in EU I think it could happen that they regulate web-advertisement if it becomes too much of an issue. But there's loads of money in the market - so I would expect loads of lobbyism.
- anoncake 7y agoThe money isn't even the main issue here. Political parties rely on ad agencies for their campaigns.
- cyborgx7 7y agoIt seems like if all advertising gets banned, no political party individually would be put at a dissadvantage to the others.
- ZiiS 7y agoPolitical parties are not optimising for fair. They want to preserve the advantage rich and powerful parties currently enjoy.
- cyborgx7 7y agoThis is why when people say they don't take money from big corporations or rich donors, it's such an important factor. It's not just that you as a political party are incentivized to what they want so they will keep giving you money. Even if you donÄt directly succumb to their demands, you are incentivized to keep them rich so they will keep having all that money to give you.

- dooglius 7y agoThey could just carve out an exception for themselves
- anoncake 7y agoNo, but the political party that wants to ban advertising will have a hard time finding an advertising agency.
- chongli 7y agoWith the style of regulation preferred by the EU, I’m afraid the end result will be the death of independent websites and the establishment of a handful of de facto official websites that have the resources to follow all of the regulations, just like TV. This may just be some inevitable fact about humanity. We’ve seen this sort of regulation and ultimate centralization of every single communications medium going back to the printing press. When I was younger, I legitimately believed the web would be different. I thought it would be a decentralizing, democratizing force for peace in the world. Now it seems destined to be the opposite of those things: a centralized tool for polarization and control.
