Even in Denmark where I am from originally and where they've gone to great lengths to improve public transportation it's not preferred. Denmark is a small country and the efforts are huge, yet even there people prefer the car. The issue is that you can't just build a solid infrastructure for everyone, it's impossibly expensive the further out you get.
