Looking at a 10 year window. There's a low probability, but non-zero, that I'll be able to correctly align and distribute DOM elements both horizontally and vertically. I might accomplish this by dropping support for the Internet Explorer family of browsers.
- fragmede 7y agoStill, our tools will need us to pick one screen size and only be able to handle either smartphone, tablet, or desktop resolution with such grace. Magically handling all 3 will take a bit longer.
- at-fates-hands 7y ago> I might accomplish this by dropping support for the Internet Explorer family of browsers. I was just working on some legacy stuff last week. Only worked in IE11, in compatibility mode. I had to use vanilla JS to get some data out of a huge form. Yeah, document.querySelector('#app') doesn't work. I found out, "It only works on modern browsers" which IE11 doesn't qualify as, which is kind of funny to me. I ended up using document.getElementById('app') instead though, which did work.
- non-entity 7y agoYou could probably find a polyfill to implement querySelector for IE. I've done that for a number of features I didn't want to re implement from scratch
- jauco 7y agoWhat about Document.getElementById(“app”)?
- stringyham 7y agoIs there some joke I'm not getting? querySelector has worked on IE since version 8.
- at-fates-hands 7y agoExcept when you're running in compatibility mode.
- stringyham 7y agoCompatibility mode would be like coding for IE7. Not IE11's fault :D
- at-fates-hands 7y agoYeaper. "Legacy software man, it's a helluva drug!"
- buboard 7y agoTry tables
- scotty79 7y agoYou laugh but I recently had some floats but they didn't do exactly what I so I tried to make a flexbox sized to content, and it occured to me that I just want good old table to align my items.
- buboard 7y agoi m dead serious. i use tables even with bootstrap, i like the way they gracefully realign between horizontal and vertical modes in mobile. (e.g. here https://coinzaa.com/ https://coinzaa.com/) Tables are great. I believe that all these grid systems will end up reinventing tables 100% anew. I propose that they add new elements to HTML instead, <grid> <gr> <gd> etc. They will work 100% exactly like tables, but semantic people won't feel guilty using them.
