I didn't know banks weren't allowed to use NFC for payments in Apple world. That's frankly crazy, there's no way that'd fly in the long run. Any insights to why Apple even tried this?

I’m personally not excited for banks to come up with crappy, less secure versions of Apple Pay, to be honest.

  I guess we have different experiences with banks. I'd never use Apple or Google as a wallet myself, they already have enough power without tapping to people's financial transactions.

Apple tends to frown on applications that do the same or similar things to Apple's own apps. This used to be explicitly disallowed in App Store rules, though now only certain things aren't allowed like third-party App stores or third-party web browsers.
