I use my arrow keys for buffer navigation in normal mode:
nnoremap <up> :Buffers<cr>
nnoremap <down> :b#<cr>
nnoremap <left> :bp<cr>
nnoremap <right> :bn<cr>
...and disable them in insert mode:
inoremap <down> <nop>
inoremap <left> <nop>
inoremap <right> <nop>
inoremap <up> <nop>
