I kind of blame UX for this. Most of these attempts at curating installation all started as well intended means of keeping malware out of the OS. If you think it’s bad today, you forgot what it was like 20 years ago. However, the evolution of platform protection slowed down as it became clear this was an amazing revenue generator. Incentives became blurred, and it’s why you have so much malware on the App Store masquerading as casual games.
