When a team is close in abilities with a single outlier it can be difficult to have special cases. Because there isn’t a wide variation between people policies are expected to be “fair”. The alternative is strict hierarchies where its made clear that some people have better abilities. That comes with extra privileges (money, flexibility, etc). The one thing you can’t get away with is pretending everyone is equal but some are more equal than others.
