Before I got into robotics, I was working on neuroscience and engineering. I visited a very famous animal lab as I was visiting to become a graduate student, and I was just so profoundly depressed I realized I could never do it. Sorta fell into robotics after that, and while there are ethical complications in any field there is nothing remotely on the level of animal testing.
