Project Voldemort: A Distributed Database
- quanticle 16y agoEvery time I see an article on Project Voldemort, I'm surprised that J.K. Rowling hasn't filed a copyright claim on the name.
- DavidBishop 16y agoMaybe to avoid the lawsuits they will call it Project That Must Not Be Named.
- larrik 16y agoI just had my own run in with their legal department, so I would imagine its a matter of time.
- nodata 16y agoWhy though? This has nothing to do with Harry Potter. (Also I don't think copyright would be appropriate here, maybe trade marks? She doesn't have one.)
- dspeyer 16y agoMaybe because it protects data with replication and sharding? But hopefully doesn't provide copies of your data to your enemies by accident.
- ronp 16y agoYes, she (and the publisher) most certainly have trademarks as well as copyrights in the characters. "Famous" trademarks are especially fraught with peril.

- disponsible 16y agoWhat is a great name. adj. voldemorted - distributed
- jcr 16y agoWell, it's distributed until you kill all the nodes.
- whakojacko 16y ago"Database" isn't entirely correct, its a distributed K/V store. Maybe its just me, but the word database implies a lot of additional functionality that Voldemort doesn't have.
- j_baker 16y agoAccording to wikipedia: A database is a system intended to organize, store, and retrieve large amounts of data easily. I don't think calling Voldemort is wholly inaccurate, but I suppose you could make the case that it doesn't do the system justice due to the connotation of the word database (which usually makes people think of a SQL database).
- face 16y agoPerhaps you are thinking of a "Relational Database"?
- sophacles 16y agoMaybe he was thinking of querying by values? My (admittedly cursory) examination of this suggests I must know the key and only the key to get a value. To me a database is searchable.
- ericmsimons 16y agoMake sure the reserved words for queries are from Harry Potter as well. ex: "WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA `users` WHERE userID = 9.75"
