Great question, and one I asked myself when I was about 2 weeks into the redesign :-) On reflection, basically no, you're right, there was no reason I couldn't have shipped and then improved the design in the meantime. The thing about it not being good enough for people to pay for was just my opinion - not tested with real customers.
