The standup criticized in the post is the one prevalent in the scrum methodology, where everyone focus on what they have done and will be doing. Standups can be much more different, for e.g. in Kanban standups a team discusses the progress on each ticket. The proposed method doesn't seem to replace any of them though. It is something which every engineering team should already be doing.
