Ah yes, the perfect solution to a housing crisis: xenophobia, and using market mechanisms to enact the kinds of mass expulsions whose mere suggestion gets Trump labeled all kinds of mean things. Mean things like racist or Nazi. All because he wants to do on paper what California does every day with prices: make the people he believes are inferior get out of "his" land.

"California" doesn't do this. Certain urban regions in California do this. There are low-cost areas of California.

  California as a whole passed Prop 13 by a ballot measure, which prevents localities from fixing the problem by taxing long-time housing wealth at the same rate it inflates in value.

That was the entire point of the Princeton study from this weekend: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21431061 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21431061 Having all the "desirable" people in one place maximizes capital efficiency and damn the consequences. Feels like more and more people agree with Trump at some level but they're couching it in other terms to.. not get called names? I'm not 100% sure on that bit.

IME, loads and loads of people agree with Trump on the level that some people ought to be made to GTFO from Wherever They Live. The big disagreements are on who society should target for enforced expulsion, how expulsion should be enforced (housing prices vs "canceling" vs ICE raids), and what mean names we're allowed to call people whose targets differ from ours (eg: expelling "immigrants" is Bad and Racist, but expelling "techbros" is Good and Woke, even at the intersection of immigrant tech-workers).
