Well, the answer to that is simple. #boycottgitlab
I am working at a European company where the amount of Russian engineers is constantly increasing (similar thing happens in many of the bigger companies nearby). And they prove to be quite ok.
So since today I will speak strongly against use of Gitlab in my workplace should such a talk begin.
- rutierut 7y agoI think you are confusing them having something against Russia(gov) with Russians(people). They also clearly state that current employees will not be affected. Reading the motivation behind it and the possible dangers it would pose to their clients. I think it's very reasonable not to continue having sensitive data be available in Rus & Chi. What would you do in this case?
- beyondcompute 7y agoI believe, that I am capable of discerning those things :) Though I suspect that we are over-thinking. Imagine Germany, 1935. “Company X will stop hiring Jews as it deals with stuff important for the military”. And the society be like, “thank you, company X, we are positively pleased with your transparency and shmamparency”. Are you crazy, people? I think, that Gitlab is the one that confuses Chinese, the people and Chinese government, let’s say.
- antocv 7y agoThey are not crazy. They never changed from being slave-masters, imperialists, colonialists and racists. Its the same elite class which holds power today in US and UK with direct lineage from slave-masters and imperialists.
- antocv 7y agoGitlabs actions affect Russians(people) and not Russia(gov). Their motivation, should they apply it to UK, US, Spain and France, should lead them to forbid having employees from those countries as well. As a Swede, I would not like my gitlab sensitive data to be in the hands of US gov. If you really believe national security agencies do not apply pressure to any tech employees just because they are X citizens of their X country - you need to mature a little bit more, perhaps read Snowdens book and look into what happened with Wikileaks.
- rimliu 7y agoMaybe Russian people should do something about their government then. Alas, it enjoys massive support.
- gdy 7y agoBe careful. This way you may end up justifying terrorist attacks against American citizens coming as a retribution for the foreign policy and military adventures of the democratically elected American government.
- Dolores12 7y agoWhat made you think the Russians are not OK with their government?
- beyondcompute 7y agoI think, that it’s reasonable not to use servers located in certain countries and not to use (closed-source) software made by some bigger companies there. I myself would not use much of the software or services from the countries mentioned. Because I know who might well be getting access to my data and what those people’s approximate values are. But not hiring devs that are maybe trying to get away from those places? As a dev and an immigrant myself I could not just stay silent about that.
- older 7y agoIf anything, I'll start doing exact opposite. So since today I will speak strongly in favor of use of Gitlab in my workplace should such a talk begin.
- beyondcompute 7y agoMaybe also prohibit people from certain cultures to use bathrooms and seat next to the “pure ones”.
- ecmascript 7y agoWhat? For me this is a big reason on why I want to use Gitlab. I am european and I think you're being pretty stupid. You celebrate that the company you work for hire people in Russia rather from where you live. You seem to fail to realize that if all companies in your country would do that you would soon find yourself out of a job since there is always some place cheaper. No one is saying russians aren't knowledgeable or good at what they do. Maybe you should read what they actually write instead of simply projecting your straw man ideas onto them.
- EugeneOZ 7y agoMaybe you should read more about "protectionism", "nationalism" and "discrimination" - not just definitions, but how they affect economic.
- rimliu 7y agoDoes that reading include Russia's plan to create their own internet free of influence from the rotten West?
