Cpus are now lasting a lot longer... a top end cpu is likely to still be fast enough after 6 years, maybe longer. Catching up to Intel and surpassing them may be good enough for a whole decade.
- clarry 7y agoDunno, my Ryzen 7 1800X was relatively "top end" when I got it on launch day, and I'm already itching for 16 cores & faster RAM. I can't imagine using my T470p for work for five more years, it's already feeling horrendously slow.
- gscott 7y agoNothing wrong with wanting the newest latest and greatest but your "old" setup is good! https://www.techspot.com/review/1863-two-years-later-ryzen-1800x-vs-core-i7-7700k/ https://www.techspot.com/review/1863-two-years-later-ryzen-1...
- lonelappde 7y agoIf you don't care about electricity/thermals, midtier 95w 4core chips from 2011 are still plenty fast. If you do care about energy, then Intel gets better every year, with 5w tdp-down i7 chips coming out.
