One of these days, someone is going to suggest the radical idea that there might be some connection between (a) a culture of authority and draconian measures where adolescents aren't respected and the very people who are supposed to look after them and set an example are instead their enemies and not to be trusted and (b) a culture where significant numbers of adolescents think it's OK to commit extreme acts that harm themselves or others.
