Try Ctrl-X Ctrl-C, then type vim, that usually helps.

  Now I've opened vim! I don't see how this advice is anything but a disaster. How do I get back to emacs again?

    I was going to make a joking comment about how vim will trap you if you use C-c C-c, or C-x C-s, but apparently that's no longer true! My mac's vim (8.0) apparently kindly gives a message: Type :qa! and press <Enter> to abandon all changes and exit Vim
