Peter Thiel. No, not because he is a Trump supporter, but rather because of his Philosophy that you don’t have to support every plank in a parties platform to support the platform. Too often it seems we’ve become an all or nothing society instead of agreeing to disagree on something’s while working to find common ground on others. Obama talked about it earlier today regarding people’s need to elevate their own sense of self-worth by chastising others on their indiscretions, stating, “That doesn’t solve the problem”
- elamje 7y agoAhh, he would have been a great add to the poll! I didn’t think about it when I made it!
- IfOnlyYouKnew 7y agoThat's just a convenient excuse for the consequences of one's actions. Thiel doesn't "agree to disagree" about the various atrocities of the Trump administration. He simply doesn't care about the people being affect by those policies. He is weighing whatever personal benefit he saw in supporting Trump higher than those harms, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with criticising someone for being egotistical. Beyond that, the idea that "you have to support every plank..." is a strawman: In a two-party system, you never agree completely with either party. Therefore, such a requirement hasn't ever been a thing, nor is it today.
- blackflame 7y ago"He simply doesn't care about the people being affected by those policies" - I'm pretty sure he's directly affected by LGBTQ policies but as you said, in his calculus, the pros outweigh the cons.
- lonelappde 7y agoThiel isn't LBTQ. He's G. And he doesn't have children and didn't get married until long after legalization in the US, and didn't get married in the US anyway.
- blackflame 7y agoOh thanks for clarifying, I thought he was all 62
- thundergolfer 7y agoHow is that Thiel’s “philosophy”? That’s an attitude taken by nearly everyone. There’s not some weird purity test being run that’s stopping Left and Right from “finding common ground”. The Republican administration forwards and agenda including many things people just won’t compromise on, like say Climate Change action. Thiel is a techno-libertarian, so in the main he’s pretty well aligned with the Republican platform. Sure, he probably despises the homophobic evangelical part of the Republican base, but as a billionaire he’s pretty excellently insulated from their influence.
- blackflame 7y agoCan you make your political bias any more obvious? Compromise is a way of life unless you turn everything into a life or death, good or bad, moral or immoral decision so that you can claim the virtuous high ground as a way to justify your means in the name of your ends
