When does startship need to light its engines on landing? What about landing in a 2000 foot deep hole in the ground?

  I don't follow. What's the hole for?

    Presumably to let it hold off on lighting the engines until it is below the surface of the Earth, to avoid radiating the sound outward.

      Setting aside the economic infeasibility of a 2000 foot hole, the rocket's gonna have to fly out of it at some point.
