Is there any kind of effort to create a non crappy plugin that would support the huge archive of flash content out there? I understand the reasons behind this but it seems like over 15 years of flash content is about to be rendered unaccessible.

In theory I see no reason someone couldn't create a WASM implementation of Flash. Flash is closed-source though so I imagine that would be rather difficult to do without Adobe's cooperation.
