While I agree with your point around how loan programs work with the poorer parts of our population, the headline explicitly states: America’s Middle Class Is Addicted to a New Kind of Credit I think in the case of the middle class, it's not really about survival, it's about living below/at/beyond your means, and whether these loans are doing too good a job of masking the real costs.
