At least in Biology, productivity depends a lot on junior lab techs, since there's a lot of "busy work" to generate results. Not really a peer-reviewed study, just common sense stuff from my own experience. Since I'm waiting on the output for data to analyze, not enough lower-level staff is something I tend to notice.
