The nice thing is, you can start small. Thats how everyone does it really, just add one thing at a time, most of which is fairly simple. Just some hue motion sensors and lights can make for some nice automations. I used Home Assistant to graph my pool temp, and control my pump so that I made most use out of our solar heaters.
