In my experience most plugins were actually pretty ok-ish, but just maintaining the Jenkins installation itself was a horror job. Every once in a while a bad dependency upgrade would crash the entire installation – my only option was to go through the crash logs (basically 100+ lines stack traces) to find out which plugin was responsible and roll back this specific change.
