We had a brief period where a significant portion of writers wanted to be balanced enough to be "neutral" to appeal to a wider audience (probably for higher ad revenue) but realistically that didn't last long after Watergate. After that, every reporter wanted to change the world.. which means put forth the agenda they believe in. We've simply come full circle.
