There's an argument to be made that maybe we'd be using Ntru by now if its inventors hadn't decided to file patents for it. Lucky for us the patents are expired now. Patents are the most reliable way to make sure your crypto isn't used widely for 20 years...

Not just crypto. Arithmetic coding, known to have better compression than Huffman, is almost unused due to patents.
