I've seen almost every one of my old favorite news cites tear holes in its focus and its integrity chasing clicks. Clickbait, misleading headlines, and wildly off-brand stories seem to be the norm now. It's gotten bad enough that I've begun filtering my content by author rather than by site. Whenever I see a big headline on a general news site, my first thought these days is wondering how each of the other sites I read will bend over backwards and stretch the story to the breaking point to make it somehow relevant to that site's focus. A recent low point this week was beloved technology news site Ars Technica running a front page story about a man having his forty pound scrotum removed.
