Apple Calls Android Tablets 'Vapor' - and It Isn't Just Hot Air
- jcr 16y ago> It may sound like I am being impatient. Has Apple spoiled us with product launches that include actual, functional products to show off? Call me crazy, but that's what I expect: an actual product. Whether you love or hate Apple, you have to give them both credit and respect for showing up with working products. It's a wonderful change from the status quo.
- brk 16y agoI agree. I'd love to see the tech press step up with some responsibility as well and give no more than a casual mention to prototype devices that aren't actually shipped, or scheduled to ship in the next 90 days.
- trotsky 16y agoLest we forget, the main purpose of shows like CES is for buyers and to let manufacturers gauge demand. Apple is in a much different situation than most OEMs who need to secure partners and shelf space. If companies like acer, asus, etc. tried to go around to their large stable of retail buyers in secret all that'd happen is the details would leak out well before their "available now" announcement.
- mrj 16y agoThat their demos show working products is very awesome, true. But to be fair, the often also announce them quite a bit before they're actually available. Just to let the suspense build, I guess.
- davidedicillo 16y agoNo, that's something that usually happen for those devices that have to go through FCC and it would be impossible maintain secrecy at that point. Usually is always "available today" or a matter of days.
- jcr 16y agoFCC is one bottle neck, but it's not the major one. Once a device is "finished," there's also production ramp-up (component deliveries, manufacturing process, ...) and filling the distribution pipelines. Both of these make the FCC approval look fast by comparison. Additionally, there are certain advantages in reporting pre-order sales, building hype, and so on.
- stcredzero 16y agoIt's a wonderful change from the status quo. Also, now when the competitors show up with stuff that's vapor, it just makes them look bad in comparison.
