The reasoning for eliminating the public editor was that today, social media does a far better job at it than anyone in-house ever could, especially considering the widespread view that it's impossible to independently criticise one's own organisation.
- will4274 7y agoWhich is, of course, ridiculous. The public editor (or ombudsman at WaPo) served a crucial role in giving official "news" status and internal information about drawbacks in their own reporting - neither function which can be filled by randoms on social media.
