Idea for anyone who can find a way to communicate this back to Jayden and his mom.. (I think I will do so later today):
Set up a website and take on custom orders for a commission, for e.g. $20-40 (including shipping) to make and send custom made figurine.. you upload the photo/request, wait for a first green light, then pay for the commission and get a message with an ETA, and on said ETA you receive your figurine
- tudorw 7y agoAs someone generally regarded as on some sort of spectrum, while your sentiment is appreciated, please take care, what you are describing sounds stressful, and it may be important not to attach something that brings joy to something that brings stress.
- k_sze 7y agoMaybe the website can just be programmed to not take orders too quickly? To be draconian, they could setup a "queue" with only one slot, and even implement some kind of cooldown before taking another order. Maybe that way Jayden won't feel overwhelmed.
- ptah 7y agothere should also be an "Accept Order" stage to ensure Jayden is able and willing to make that particular figurine
- HenryBemis 7y agoYes, my bad, by "green light" it would be on Jayden's side to assess the appropriateness of the source provided (some trolls may send nasty pictures), as well as workload, appetite for work (so it doesn't become forced labour on a child with his characteristics) and so on.. Perhaps even a "counter"/queue/approximate ETA (the ETA can be manipulated to show 30% more so there is no pressure)
- sadness2 7y agoSounds too cheap
- HenryBemis 7y agoI have no idea about such items, the article stated $10. Thus the $40 is x4 the $10.. One thing I completely failed to consider is that Jayden joins this event(s) not for the income but for the participation, the sense of belonging and not being isolated. If he stays home making figurines 24/7 then that beats the purpose, and it's something I definitely did not aim for with my idea.
- doesitlookgood 7y agoI think your mind is in the right place. My spouse and I both have histories hauntingly similar to Jayden's, and taking this approach, albeit learning many caveats to it along the way (eg. artwork on commission is best handled immediately, and with thick oven mitts), we've done decently for ourselves. If he doesn't struggle with focus for autism-related reasons like we did (or has -guidance- in that struggle), and his family continues to support his artwork without the background hum of 'when is he going to make real money off that' that I've heard all too often in families with a developmentally disabled child, he'll go far.
