Every city has (at a minimum) a few nice suburbs where the good stuff is. Also it helps if your standards are lower than those of the people throwing things out. I'm pretty sure every piece of wood furniture I have "should be refinished" according to someone but it's all as nice as the stuff the people I hang out with have so why bother.
