This seems a bit speculative. Research is carried out all over the world, and at least when it comes to health many countries aren't as hysterical (excuse the pun) as the US about political correctness. I agree somewhat with the GP, though. There are ways to discern mental issues, but very few physicians will ask patients about their mood unless problems are really obvious.
