A Royal Marine who learned coding on a warship without internet
- Pete-Codes 7y agoAny vets who have gone into coding here? Ben Ford learned on a ship on his way to Iraq. Not the standard way to learn Python!
- boothead 7y agoInterviewee here. AMA, particularly if you're a veteran who wants to get into tech. I'd love to hear from my betheren over the pond what the signalling and transition process is like for guys and gals leaving the US forces.
- Pete-Codes 7y agoAs with most things military, there is a lot more support in the US. There is the @vetswhocode group on Twitter which is a charity set up to get vets back into work. America in general does this a lot better than we do!
- boothead 7y agoYes, unfortunately you're right that they do the whole signposting and support better than we do. There are bodies in the UK who are providing more support for example https://techvets.co/ https://techvets.co/ and many of the large financial institutions in London have veterans programs these days, but we've got a long way to go in comparison!
- simonblack 7y agoSome of us started coding before the internet was available. We learned syntax from books, and copied programs from magazines and dissected them to work in different ways while learning what all the different parts did. We also learned how to reverse-engineer working programs to see how they ticked. It wasn't 'better' or 'worse', just a different way of learning.
