Would be neat if we could get one of these for politicians that lie!
- lawn 7y agoMaybe start with the president?
- williesleg 7y agoI agree, Obama should be in jail.
- knorthfield 7y agoHow would anyone become President?! /joke
- throwaway_law 7y agoRead my lips: no new Taxes - Bush Sr. I did not have sexual relations with that woman - Clinton We found the weapons of mass destruction. - G.W. Bush If you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it. - Obama
- pwinnski 7y agoThis highlights the issue with criminalizing "lying," because these are not all the same. George H.W. Bush broke a promise, which is not (always) lying. Bill Clinton lied. George W. Bush, it's still not clear, but more likely lying than not. Barack Obama made a promise it turned out was out of his control to keep. The only one of the four we can say for certain lied is Clinton. And, of course, the current president.
- munificent 7y agoClinton's statement hinges on your definition of "sexual relations". For many, that means "any kind of sexual activity". I grew up in the South and there I understood it to mean good old p-in-v intercourse. If you got to third base with someone (oral) and a friend asked you if you had "sexual relations", you would honestly answer "no". I believe this strict definition comes from being a highly Christian culture where certain sex acts are proscribed and others aren't. "Sexual relations" is really defined as "the sex stuff the Bible says you can't do outside of marriage." Of course, at a high level, Clinton was very clearly trying to obscure the facts of his relationship with Lewinsky, but whether or not that sentence was literally a lie depends on the definition of the words in the sentence and there is a reasonable interpretation (Clinton himself is from the South) under which it is factually true.
- throwaway_law 7y agoClinton lied under oath, he was impeached for lying under oath, he even lost his license to practice law as a result of his lies.
- dantheman 7y agoObama knew well in advance that the statements they were making were not true.
- gruez 7y agoCare to elaborate on that? Looks like there was a bill to fulfill it, but it stalled after the house passed it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_Your_Health_Plan_Act_of_2013 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_Your_Health_Plan_Act_of_2...
- throwaway_law 7y agoFor starters your health insurance is a contract between the insurer and the insured. Obama is a lawyer, he knew or should have known he has no right to make such a statement to the public. At anytime the insurer had the right to discontinue those plans. So it seems pretty clear he made that statement solely for political purposes to push his party's bill through.
- JamesBarney 7y agoRead my lips: no new Taxes - Bush Sr. This was a statement of intent that he wasn't able to fulfil, not a lie. I did not have sexual relations with that woman - Clinton This was a lie. We found the weapons of mass destruction. - G.W. Bush Some people lied, I'm not entirely sure it was G.W. Bush. If you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it. - Obama I don't think this was an intentional lie, but an overly broad statement.
- KevinEldon 7y agoThe House of Representatives would be a better place to start. Presidents have term limits and draw from the broadest pool of voters. Representatives have no term limits, draw from the smallest pools of voters, and are often rewarded for extreme rhetoric and hyper-partisanship.
