Let's keep in mind that beyond just his tireless efforts to advocate for Free Software Stallman also built almost all of the GNU toolset. Let's put aside his politics and views on licensing and what we have is a genius developer who single handedly has done more to advance computing with the GNU tool set and the distribution thereof than anyone else in the past 30 years. Without Stallman for example there would be no Linux as we know it because you'll notice most of the actual tools that allow you to do things on Linux are GNU tools written by Stallman. Regardless of his views on how society and software should interact he still is one of the most important figures in the history of computing and deserves some respect and appreciation for that.
