- jph 7y agoFully agree. In fact, we use these XDG helper functions. data_home() { printf %s\\n "${XDG_DATA_HOME:=$HOME/.local/share}" ; } cache_home() { printf %s\\n "${XDG_CACHE_HOME:=$HOME/.cache}" ; } config_home() { printf %s\\n "${XDG_CONFIG_HOME:-$HOME/.config}" ; } runtime_home() { printf %s\\n "${XDG_RUNTIME_HOME:=$HOME/.runtime}" ; }
- 4ad 7y agoI hate that. Dotfiles that I didn't create myself are bad enough, but now they become even worse because they are harder to get to. XDG_CONFIG_HOME is just putting the trash under the rug and claiming you cleaned the house. Of course, because now dotfiles are harder to get to, it encourages software to create even more spam. One possible useful function of the XDG variables would be to set XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR to $HOME. That never seems to work for me. It's bizarre to me that other people like these hierarchies. I prefer everything to be as flat as possible. I used to keep all my source code in $HOME/src (everything, C code, Go code, GCC, the Linux kernel, etc) and I wish I could have kept it in $HOME. I couldn't do that because of GOPATH, but now with Go modules I finally can!
- half-kh-hacker 7y agoI don't mind things being created in the $HOME directory but the inconsistent casing as different applications create folders can be annoying
- mfontani 7y agoI like the fact that I can put ~/.config under VCS more easily than I can put ~/ under a VCS. OTOH, I've recently (months) started to use yadm[1] and seeing that it maybe doesn't matter and all I needed was a tool to make managing my home & configurations in a simpler way.
