There's a lot of information in the world that isn't on a powerpoint slide.

  Yes, of course. It would be useful to include some of that information on the slide to help justify why the session is three hours. As it, I think the author loses credibility as this is an irrational, non-data driven conclusion. Using evidence to support statements is even more important when introducing a new concept to an audience.
