If you look at it from the perspective of a collectivist culture, which China is, this is indeed a very big deal. The president's own daughter jetting off to the USA whilst the party has been ramping up its anti-western rhetoric has major political ramifications. However, I highly doubt this news will reach the majority of people in China.

- dirtyid 7y agoXi's daughter goes to Harvard is common news. It wasn't particularly scandalous. She majored in English at Zhejiang University, which is a "C9" institution, aka Chinese Ivy League. C9 universities have academic connections to western institutions, including Harvard where she studies English translation. It makes sense to study English translation in an English school. This is filler news from Taiwan with all the associated agenda and bias. Don't read too much into it.

- A2017U1 7y agoWhat news does reach "the majority of people in China"? The children of senior officials routinely study overseas, it's painfully mundane. As for China "ramping up anti-western rhetoric", I'm truly struggling to see what you mean being in a unique position between the two, would actually say the opposite. Are you sure about that or is it more a localized viewpoint far removed from statements made by the Chinese government and media arms?
